Calling All Bicycle Enthusiasts!  Ewing Green Team To Host 9th Annual Fall Spin Bike Tour As A Part Of Ewing Community Fest

Mayor Bert Steinmann, the Ewing Green Team, and the Ewing Recreation Department are pleased to announce that Ewing’s annual Fall Spin bike tour will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023, starting at 8:15am.

We invite you to join your fellow Ewingites and pedal your way through town on a 12-mile leisurely ride with a guided Police escort, and enjoy a morning of exercise, fun and camaraderie.  There will be rest stops with refreshments and free bike inspections, provided by Hart’s Cyclery, will be available.

The event, now in its 9th year, has been a hit with area residents who enjoy taking a leisurely tour of the town with their friends and family members. It’s also a great opportunity to meet fellow residents from across Ewing.

This event kicks off Ewing’s annual Community Fest Celebration at TCNJ, starting and ending at Campus Town.

Each year the proceeds are donated to a different charity.  The selected charity for 2023 is Meals on Wheels of Mercer County, a local nonprofit dedicated to providing nutritious meals and related services, while easing the social isolation of our senior and homebound participants.  The goal of the services is to assist participants, who wish to remain in their homes, maintain independence, dignity, health, and well-being.

The Ewing Fall Spin is open to individuals or teams, ages 18 years and older.  You are encouraged to register early as there is a maximum number of 60 riders allowed. “We would love participants to sign up as individuals or come as a team of friends, family members or co-workers,” says EGT Member and Bike Tour Chairperson, Garry Keel. The Fall Spin registration fee is $25 prior to September 23rd and $30 thereafter. All persons registering by September 23rd will receive a T-shirt. Day-of-event registration will begin at 7:45am.

Ewing Green Team Presents Donation to HomeFront

The 5th Annual Ewing Fall Spin officially concluded at the December 10, 2019 Ewing Council Meeting with the presentation of the event proceeds to HomeFront, this year’s ride beneficiary.  A check in the amount of $990 was presented by Bike Ride Committee Chair Garry Keel to HomeFront representative Liza Peck.  He said about the ride: “In addition to raising nearly $1000 for HomeFront, what stood out to me on this year’s ride was listening to Ewing residents talking with each other about the various Ewing neighborhood and meeting other Ewing residents for the first time.  It was truly a community interactive event.”

The ride is run by the Ewing Green Team‘s Bike Advocacy Group, a contingent of citizen volunteers interested in promoting healthy lifestyles, a more bikeable Ewing, and raising awareness of bike safety,  in conjunction with the Ewing Recreation Department.  It is held annually as the start-up event for Ewing’s Community Fest celebration and riders, sent off by Mayor Bert Steinmann, depart from Campus Town and travel throughout the community for approximately 12 miles.   This year’s ride on September 21st was run to support HomeFront.

The Ewing Green Team is delighted to be able to support the good works of HomeFront, our local non-profit which works to end the cycle of poverty and prevent homelessness in Central New Jersey.  Harnessing the caring, resources and expertise of the community, they are able to “lessen the immediate pain of homelessness and help families become self-sufficient…  giving “clients the skills and opportunities to ensure adequate incomes.”

Ewing 3rd Annual Fall Spin a “Great Ride”

On Saturday, September 23, 2017, residents from Ewing and other Mercer County townships enjoyed glorious weather and a great ride during the Ewing Green Team’s 3rd Annual Fall Spin. Nearly 50 riders, including a team from the Ewing Police Department, participated in the bike event that began and ended at Campus Town.  Mayor Bert Steinmann kicked off the ride at the college’s Campus Town. Bikers had the option of a short 8-mile tour of Ewing neighborhoods, or a longer, 18-mile tour. Upon completion of the ride, bikers were invited over to Community Fest to join in with the fun and festivities that were already underway.

The theme for this year’s ride, “Bike Riding for a Healthier You” was organized in part, to highlight September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and all proceeds from the event were donated to the American Cancer Society’s Run for Dad event in support of prostate cancer awareness and research.

According to EGT Member and Bike Ride Coordinator, Garry Keel, “Each year we continue to refine the event so that participants enjoy the day, get a little exercise and meet new folks. Feedback from this year’s participants indicated that the most enjoyable part was meeting their neighbors and seeing different parts of the township.  We are grateful to our business sponsors: RJ’s Café, Philly Pretzel Factory, and Knapp’s Cyclery, as well as the Ewing Recreation Department, for their support of this year’s event. And we’ve already begun planning for next year. We welcome anyone interested in helping us plan the 2018 Fall Spin.”

Many thanks to EGT member Mark Wetherbee for the photos.
