BAG IT – Is Your Life Too Plastic?

Join the Ewing Green Team for an award winning film and discussion about plastic pollution from single use plastic bags and our disposable lifestyles.  Moderated by Noemi de la Puente, founder and organizer of the grass roots organization, njthinkoutsidethebag.

This screening is part of an ongoing effort to educate Mercer County residents about how they can be part of the solution before they vote on November 4^th on a nonbinding referendum to support a 5¢ fee on single use plastic bags.

Organic waste is a part of our everyday lives.  We can’t help but encounter it every time we eat, tend to our yards, or many other daily chores.

That’s why we’re breaking it down for you.  County Executive Brian Hughes will offer opening remarks and a panel of experts will explain what organic waste is, where it goes and what happens in the recycling process. Panelists will present local success stories and how you can bring this program to your town.

The Curbside Organics Program is already in place in Princeton and is currently under contract in Lawrence and Hopewell. Other municipalities in Mercer are looking to join in the near future.

Organic waste recycling is an easy way to make a HUGE impact through small actions.  Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about it, while networking with other like-minded individuals from throughout the region.

The Conversation about our Industrial Food System Begins with Food, Inc.

Organic, Grow Local, GMO/GE, rBGH, antibiotic usage, factory farms, food labeling laws, processed foods, obesity epidemic, high fructose corn syrup… These are just a few of the issues about the American food supply that now bombard an awakening public. Its industrialization has filled our supermarkets with plenty, but at what cost? Are our bodies able to safely handle the thousands of chemical additives that are now routine in our diet? Is the American diet indeed responsible for the epidemic levels of food allergies, Autism, ADHD, Type  II Diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and many other conditions that are being suggested by some health and nutrition professionals? What do they all mean, how are they related, and finally, is our industrial food supply being properly regulated by the government agencies that are supposed to protect our health? Let’s start the discussion about our food in our town with a showing and discussion about documentary film Food, Inc.  Ewing Green Team is delighted to introduce as our moderator, Camille Miller, the Executive Director of the Northeast Organic Farming Association.

About Food Inc.

Food, Inc. is a 2008 American documentary film directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Robert Kenner. The film lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that’s been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. About Ms. Miller

camillemillerCamille Miller is an organic food advocate and has worked extensively in raising awareness around food and farming issues at the local, state and national levels.  She also serves as Vice-President of the Board on the NOFA Interstate Council, a seven state organic farming coalition. She is an active member in the National Organic Coalition (NOC), an alliance of grassroots organic groups and environmen-tal organizations working to provide a “Washington voice” for farmers, ranchers, environmentalists and others involved in organic agriculture as well as a national trained speaker for the Institute of Responsible Technology on Genetically Engineered food.

Community Gardens Presentation at Mercer County Extension Office on January 30th

Master Gardeners and community gardeners Dave Byers and Jim Simon will present an inspiring talk on Thursday, January 30th from 7 – 8:30 p.m. on community gardening.

Their talk will include such topics as:

  • What is a community garden?
  • Who can join a community garden?
  • Why would you do so?
  • How and where do you sign up?
  • What plants do best in a community garden setting?

Master Gardeners with experience in community gardening will provide an overview of those available in Trenton and other locations in Mercer County.

About the Presenters

David Byers has practiced as a licensed landscape architect for over 30 years, including work with Isles as a landscape consultant.  He is a Master Gardener volunteer at the Mercer County Extension Office, and long time community gardener.  He designed and coordinates the Bethany House of Hospitality Community Garden and  the Westminster Wellspring Garden, both in Trenton.   He is a 2014 appointee to the Ewing Green Team.

Jim Simon, Urban Agriculture Manager, Isles, Inc. has been involved in environmental and youth education for over twenty years. He is a Master Gardener volunteer through Rutgers Cooperative Extension and is also on the steering committee of the Trenton Cycling Revolution, a bicycling advocacy group.

“It takes a Village” at the Ewing Community Gardens

It was a great day last Saturday!  With the help and energy of yet another contingent of TCNJ student volunteers under the direction of Professor Michael Nordquist and the Community Gardens Committee we accomplished what we have been trying to do all season – decimate a huge mulch pile and put its contents onto the paths of the Ewing Community Gardens on Whitehead Road Extension.  This was a fabulous accomplishment and will make a tremendous difference to the gardeners who use the site.   Gardeners have already commented on how much easier the site is to use this year since they didn’t have to do quite so much bushwhacking to get to their plots.  The efforts of the students and gardeners Saturday have sustained and greatly improved upon our previous efforts.  In addition, we were delighted to have the compost bins set up for the gardeners use.  Now they won’t have to cart out the weedy debris but can be more environmentally friendly and compost it on site.  The weeding and the planting efforts that they contributed were just the icing on the cake!

Ewing Township, the Green Team and most especially the community gardeners have been the recipients of a number of student volunteer community service days this year and are all deeply grateful for all of the hard work that the students put in.  We believe that in addition to implementing more environmentally friendly practices at the gardens, the cleanup days, so wonderfully supported by the students, are helping to create the community in our community gardens.
