Scarecrows are coming… be on the lookout!

Coming to Ewing this fall will be a horde of crazy and creepy, festive and fun creatures appearing or leering or maybe just cute and curious throughout our town! The Ewing Green Team, Ewing Arts Commission and Art Has No Boundaries are joining together with the Ewing Recreation Department to help Ewing families, groups, and workers celebrate the Halloween season as they track down these fantastic creatures for a chance to win ca$h.

Businesses, schools, organizations and civic groups will be creating and hosting these mysterious visitors.  All Ewing businesses and organizations are welcome to participate.  Register online at ewinggreenteam.org/scarecrow-scavenger-hunt-reg/.

The All-Around Town Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt begins on Monday, September 28th and ends on Wednesday, October 23rd, giving you plenty of time to hunt them all down.  Follow the cagey clues to track them down and if you’re good and find them all, you will earn a chance to win $200. Just remember you may have to be really brave and get up close, but don’t be scared; we don’t think they bite!  Vote for your favorite and the People’s Choice business or organization will win a $100 donation to a charity of their choice.  Contest rules and ballots with fun and challenging clues are available here.   Paper ballots can also be picked up at the Ewing Community and Senior Center (ESCC) at 999 Lower Ferry Road or Hollowbrook Community Center at 320 Hollowbrook Drive. The winner will be announced on October 26th during the Ewing Recreation Department’s Annual Trunk-or-Treat festivities. For further details please go to ewinggreenteam.org/menu/scarecrow-2019.

For the 6th year we also look forward to our Annual Scarecrow Contest when a horde of Scarecrows created by local residents, groups or schools, shows up the ESCC preparatory to the Trunk or Treat event on Saturday, October 26th and judgement by our Treaters and visitors.  These Scarecrows must be made of at least 80% recycled materials. They will be on display at the Community Center and highlight the incredible juxtaposition of artistic creativity and recycling smarts by our participants.  Following judgement, the People’s Choice will be awarded $200 and the runner up $100.   To learn more and to register, go to www.ewinggreenteam.org/scarecrow-contest.

Ewing’s Fall Festival includes the Trunk or Treat event, as well as kids’ crafts and refreshments.  We’re very excited to announce that this year we are adding music and storytelling with Ewing’s very own talented entertainers Tim and Jennifer Hoh!  Tim, of Tim Hoh’s Music for Kids will provide the music and Jennifer will add her own very special storytelling to our day.  This event runs from 1-4:00 pm at the ESCC.

Projected Schedule

  • 1 – 2 pm Arts and Crafts
  • 2 – 3 pm – Music and storytelling by Tim and Jennifer Hoh
  • 3:30 pm – Trunk or Treat will begin and voting for your favorite ‘People’s Choice’ Scarecrow
  • 4 pm (appr.) – Winners announced from the Scavenger Hunt and Scarecrow Contest at the conclusion of the Trunk or Treat

Winners of the All-Around Town Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt and Annual Scarecrow Contest will be announced at approximately 4:00 pm following the conclusion of the treating and voting.  The People’s Choice for the businesses hosting the Scarecrows will also be announced. Scarecrows will remain on display at the Community Center until the following weekend for the Community to visit and enjoy.

“The Ewing Green Team is excited to partner with the Ewing Recreation Department, the Ewing Arts Commission and Art Has No Boundaries for a bigger and better Scarecrow Event this fall.  More than ever, we look forward to bringing the Ewing community together to celebrate the season while on the Scarecrow Trail and bringing a festive fall excitement to our community,” said Green Team Scarecrow Chair Lisa Feldman.   So whether you follow our Scarecrow Trail, build your own scarecrow for our contest, or both, we hope all Ewing residents, groups and workers will join the fun!

Scarecrow Contest 2018 Results

The nor’easter that blew in yesterday may have dampened the costumes, but not the spirits of Ewing’s Trick or Treaters who came out en masse with their families for the annual Spooktacular Halloween Celebration held yesterday at the Ewing Senior and Community Center, which was moved indoors this year to accommodate the inclement weather.

Held in conjunction with Trunk or Treat was the Green Team’s annual Scarecrow Contest. This year, our fifth celebration of the event, we also moved our Scarecrow indoors and offered pumpkin painting for the little kids and the opportunity to participate in our new community art project – a mural that we will be creating out of plastic bottle caps.

We extend kudos go to all of the participants in our 2018 Scarecrow Contest.  The entries exhibited new heights of creativity, resourcefulness and recycling know-how.   We thank and congratulate everyone who contributed an entry.  All were winners, whether they took home a prize or not.  Winners were judged on originality, artistry and the creative use of recycled materials and had to be constructed of at least 80% recycled, reclaimed, and/or reused materials.

As has been our custom, there were ca$h prizes.  This year there were three $50 prizes for the following categories: (1)  Family, (2) Youth Groups (Schools, Scouts…), and (3) Adults (only).  New this year was a $25 prize for the People’s Choice that was determined by Trunk or Treat event goers.  Each Trunk or Treater was given a raffle ticket to vote on their favorite Scarecrow.    Without further ado, here are the winners.

Family Award

Winning the Family Award this year were Cora and Samantha Dupee for their Adams Family entry, Thing and Cousin ItCousin It had a base constructed from an animal feed bag, hair made up from hay bale twine, a hat made out of cardboard, and glasses made from sunglasses. Thing’s base was repurposed metal fencing and the actual hand was made from bottle caps.

Group Award

The Group Award was won by the Ewing High School Environmental Club for Trash Tin Man, with the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle theme.  Trash Tin Man was created from plastic bottles, cans, cartons, wrappers, packaging wrap and stuffed with bubble wrap.  He was dressed in damaged clothing.  Also used was recycled cardboard, one-use trash pick up gloves, and hazardous waste cleanup collection (paint).

Adult Award

Billy Ann Stark took home the Adult Award for her very clever entry, Mary Pumpkins.  Mary was constructed using two pumpkins, clothing from the attic, free-cycled fabric scraps and repurposed cardboard for the hat, alpaca feed bags for the body and ornamental grass.

People’s Choice Award

The popular favorite was Scaredy Crow.  This entry was created by Meghan Jackson and family members Allison and Aidan Wittman.  This scarecrow is new to the job and is finding out the hard way that it may not be the right job for him.  You see, he’s scared of crows!  Let’s just say he’s not quite outstanding in his field yet.  His head is made from a plastic jug and newspaper  and wrapped in burlap.  His arms and legs are made from water and soda bottles, supported by wire hangers.  His clothes were made from woven plastic bags (think a kid’s potholder project).  The body of the crow is made from papier-mâché (water, flower, and newspaper).  Its feet and wings were shaped from wire hangers.  The feathers were made from flattened aluminum cans.

We also extend our thanks to the local municipal officials and artists who had the extremely difficult job of scoring the entries:  Councilwoman Jennifer Keyes-Maloney, Ewing Arts Commission Chair Mel Antler, local artist Robin Keyes, and local artist and member of Art Has No Boundaries, Ann Cheslock.  Thanks also to Councilwoman Sarah Steward who served as the event announcer.

2017 Autumn Festival a Treat for Ewing Families

A good time was had by all last Saturday, October 28th at Ewing’s annual Halloween celebration featuring the popular ‘Trunk-or-Treat’, the Ewing Green Team’s award-winning 4th Annual Scarecrow Contest, pumpkin painting, and build-your-own scarecrow crafting with refreshments and music.

The sun was shining and it was unusually warm for a late October day.  It was a glorious day for trick or treating.  Hundreds of Township kids arrived at the Ewing Senior and Community Center costumed in their scariest, spookiest, most entertaining and colorful Halloween duds for the Recreation Department’s annual Trunk or Treat event.  About 30 individuals and groups opened their trunks to display their creative talents to the treaters.  From Jurassic Park, to pirates, to graveyards, the themed trunks brought smiles to the faces of the adults and treaters alike.  Once through the candy-collecting parade, it was on to Halloween crafts of pumpkin-painting and scarecrow building led by the Ewing Green Team with assistance from Ewing High School student volunteers.

With music playing and goodies in hand, it was also time to check-out the Scarecrows being judged for cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25.00. These had to be made of 80% recycled materials in order to qualify.  Event goers ambled down the Alley of Scarecrows in front of the ESCC to admire the skills and creativity of the 25 participants who submitted entries in this year’s contest.  There were football players, soccer goalies, brownies, witches and more composed of used plastic jugs, soda cans, paper towel rolls, old clothes and curbside castoffs to fasten innovative masterpieces.

Judging for the Scarecrow Contest was graciously done by local officials and artists. They were: Councilwomen Jennifer Keyes-Maloney and Sarah Steward, member of the Ewing Arts Commission – Jennifer Winn, and local artists Joy Kreves and Robin Keyes.

Emceeing the event were Ewing’s Town Councilwomen Sarah Steward and Jennifer Keyes-Maloney.  And the winners were:

1st prize: Samantha and Cora Dupee for their creation ‘Mary, Mary Quite Contrary.’ This unique entry was constructed from a curbside castoff garden umbrella, garden tools and plant materials.

2nd Prize: Ella Lloyd for ‘Amanda-Pan-da,’ which was created using metal pans and other recyclables.

3rd Prize: Charlotte Kaplan-Piepszak and Caleb Kaplan-Phillips for ‘Rubbish Rosie.’  Rosie was a singular entry dressed in a pleated skirt fashioned from the paper wrapping from toilet paper rolls.

Contestant Billyann Stark received an honorable mention prize for her entry of ‘Granny and Elly May’ on a bicycle with a live chicken.

As the event drew to a close, lots of people were still hanging out painting the last couple of pumpkins, finishing scarecrows to take home and admiring the scarecrows on display – sure signs of a successful event!  For more photos from the day go to the Ewing Green Team Facebook page.
